Optimizing fen peatland water?table depth for romaine lettuce growth to reduce peat wastage under future climate warming

چکیده

Forty percentage of UK peatlands have been drained for agricultural use, which has caused serious peat wastage and associated greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide (CO2) methane (CH4)). In this study, we evaluated potential trade-offs between water-table management practices minimizing emissions, while seeking to sustain romaine lettuce production: one the most economically relevant crop in East Anglian Fenlands. a controlled environment experiment, measured yield, CO2, CH4 fluxes dissolved organic carbon (DOC) released from an fen soil at two temperatures (ambient +2°C) three levels (?30 cm, ?40 cm ?50 below surface). We showed that increasing water table currently used field level ?30 reduced CO2 did not affect fluxes, but significantly yield increased DOC leaching. Warming 2°C both (fresh leaf biomass) decomposition through loss as DOC. However, there was no difference dry biomass intermediate (?40 cm) low (?50 table, suggesting grown higher should similar energetic value cultivated representing possible compromise decrease oxidation maintain production.

Vascular plants promote ancient peatland carbon loss with climate warming

Northern peatlands have accumulated one third of the Earth's soil carbon stock since the last Ice Age. Rapid warming across northern biomes threatens to accelerate rates of peatland ecosystem respiration. Despite compensatory increases in net primary production, greater ecosystem respiration could signal the release of ancient, century- to millennia-old carbon from the peatland organic matter s...

An unexpected role for mixotrophs in the response of peatland carbon cycling to climate warming.

Mixotrophic protists are increasingly recognized for their significant contribution to carbon (C) cycling. As phototrophs they contribute to photosynthetic C fixation, whilst as predators of decomposers, they indirectly influence organic matter decomposition. Despite these direct and indirect effects on the C cycle, little is known about the responses of peatland mixotrophs to climate change an...

Climate change drives a shift in peatland ecosystem plant community: implications for ecosystem function and stability.

The composition of a peatland plant community has considerable effect on a range of ecosystem functions. Peatland plant community structure is predicted to change under future climate change, making the quantification of the direction and magnitude of this change a research priority. We subjected intact, replicated vegetated poor fen peat monoliths to elevated temperatures, increased atmospheri...
